Today, we’re visiting the Midwest to explore the beautiful city of Chicago and the shores of Lake Michigan. It’s a fantastic place with a unique mix of big-city energy and peaceful water.
Before we start our trip, let’s look at five words and expressions you’ll hear in today’s story. Keep your ears open for the words breeze, shoreline, to take in, stunning, and pathway. We’ll talk about what they mean at the end of the episode. But for now, let’s dive into our journey to Chicago!
When you think of Chicago, you might think of tall buildings and busy streets. But there’s another side to this city that is truly special. Chicago sits right on the edge of Lake Michigan. This lake is so enormous that when you look out at the water, you can’t see the other side. It looks just like an ocean!
Because of the water, a cool breeze often blows through the city streets. In the hot summer months, this cool wind is absolutely wonderful. People love to walk along the sandy shoreline. This shoreline, where the water meets the land, stretches for miles right next to the city.
One of the best ways to enjoy the area is to walk or ride a bicycle on the lakefront pathway. This pathway is a long, paved trail that runs right next to the water. As you travel along this trail, you can stop to take in the views. When you take in the views, you pause to look at them and really enjoy how beautiful they are.
From the water’s edge, the view of the city is stunning. The tall glass buildings rise up into the sky right next to the deep blue water of the lake. It really is a stunning sight, one of the most beautiful views in North America. People sit on the grass, listen to the waves, and enjoy the fresh air. It’s a perfect escape from the busy city life.
That was a nice little trip, wasn’t it? Now, let’s take a quick moment to review those five useful words and expressions we heard earlier.
First, we had the word breeze. A breeze is a light, gentle wind. For example, you could say, “A cool breeze felt wonderful on the hot summer afternoon.”
Next, we talked about the shoreline. The shoreline is the place where a large body of water meets the land. For example, “We walked along the sandy shoreline of the lake.”
Then, we used the expression to take in. To take in means to look at something slowly in order to enjoy it or appreciate its beauty. For example, “We sat on the bench to take in the beautiful sunset.”
After that, we used the word stunning. Stunning means extremely beautiful or surprising. For example, “The view from the top of the tower was absolutely stunning.”
Finally, we had the word pathway. A pathway is a track or a path that is made for walking or riding a bicycle. For example, “There is a lovely pathway that goes through the park.”
