Hello there, and welcome to Blazing English. I’m Emily, and I’m so happy you’re spending some time with me today. On our daily podcast, we practice English together by exploring American culture and everyday language. This week, we are traveling to some of the most famous cities in the United States. Today, we are visiting a wonderful place in the Midwest. It is the amazing city of Chicago, right next to the massive Lake Michigan. Chicago is famous for many things, but its relationship with the water is truly special.
Before we start our virtual trip, let’s look at five words you will hear in today’s episode. These words will help us describe the city. We will hear the words downtown, lakeshore, breeze, path, and view. Keep your ears open for these words as we talk.
Now, let’s picture Chicago. Imagine standing in the busy center of the city. Americans call this central area downtown. In downtown Chicago, you see incredibly tall buildings reaching into the clouds. But if you walk just a few blocks east, the buildings end, and you see something beautiful. You see Lake Michigan. This lake is so huge that it looks like a blue ocean. The area where the land meets this giant lake is called the lakeshore. It is a peaceful place right next to the big city.
When you stand by the water, you can feel a cool, gentle wind. This light wind is called a breeze. In fact, people often call Chicago the Windy City because of the cool breeze that blows off the water. Along the lakeshore, there is a very long concrete trail. This trail is a path for people who want to walk, run, or ride bicycles. You can walk along this path for miles. As you walk, you can look at the water on one side and the beautiful tall buildings on the other side. This amazing sight is a view you will never forget. The view is especially beautiful when the sun goes down. It is a wonderful mix of nature and the city.
Let’s take a quick moment to talk about those five words we just heard. They are very useful for talking about cities and nature. First, we have downtown. Downtown is the busy main area or center of a city. For example, you can say, I am going downtown to shop and eat dinner. Second, we have lakeshore. The lakeshore is the land along the edge of a lake. For example, we walked along the lakeshore to look at the water. Third is breeze. A breeze is a light, gentle wind. For example, a cool breeze felt nice on a hot summer day. Fourth, we have path. A path is a narrow track or road made for walking or riding a bicycle. For example, there is a safe bicycle path in the park. And fifth is view. A view is what you can see from a certain place. For example, the hotel window has a beautiful view of the lake.
Learning a language is a journey that happens step by step. Every day you listen, you get a little bit better, so be proud of yourself for practicing today. I hope you will join me again tomorrow for our next episode. We will continue our trip through American cities, and our next stop is Seattle, a gorgeous city located right between mountains and water. Have a wonderful day, and I will see you next time. Bye-bye!
